Tips for your wedding and marriage

My husband and I recently celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary. I can’t believe it’s been that long! However, I must say that it’s been an amazing journey and I am truly am happy to have found my soul mate. I am not saying that it’s always easy because a marriage takes work, but once you put in the work everything falls into place. Here are some tips that I have found helpful.

  1. If you can afford a wedding planner hire one. If not, make sure you have a friend or family member who’s experienced and willing to take charge. We had so many mishaps in our wedding and reception that I still can’t bring myself to watch the video. Maybe on our 20th anniversary.
  2. Don’t sweat the small stuff. No matter how much you love the person at times they will get on your nerves. You need to learn to let go of the little things and see the bigger picture.
  3. Tell each other something positive every day. It could be as simple as I love you because… or a list of what they did that day to make your day brighter.
  4. Make time for each other. Once you start your careers and get settled into married life it’s sometimes easy to put each other off to the side. Have a date night once a week, turn off your cell phone, and give your full undivided attention.
  5. Once you have children it’s even easier to put your marriage on the back burner, but now more than ever it’s important to invest the time and effort into your marriage.  Have a date night away from the kids at least once a month. Sometimes we mothers feel guilty and don’t want to leave the children; however, it is important to teach your kids how to have a strong healthy relationship so that when they grow up they can have healthy relationships too. The way to teach them that is to be their role model.

Marriage is a beautiful journey that you get to share with the person you love. It is like a garden, when the fruits are ripe and ready you get to enjoy them, however, to get to that part you have to plant the seeds, pull the weeds, and provide all the nutrients to make it grow. Marriage takes the same effort but the results are you get to spend it with the person you love.  Happy wedding planning and we wish you many years of happiness in your marriage.
