The meaning of the rainbow and its colors in Hawaii

Did you know rainbows were an important part of Hawaiians culture? You will often see rainbows depicted in petroglyphs. For example, a woman depicted with an arch or rainbow indicates she is honored and respected. A man petroglyph with a rainbow is interpreted as the “keeper of the land” and its people. Some natives have said that each color of the rainbow represents a Goddess and thinking of that color will bring about the element associated with it.

Rainbow colors and Goddesses

White represents the element of water and the Goddess Hina who gives knowledge.

Red is for freedom and the Goddess Haumea.  A stone is used as her element.
